What Are Implant Dentures?

Implant-retained dentures, or All-on-4® dentures, are prostheses that use dental implants as anchors. Unlike traditional dentures, which rely on suction and adhesives, implant dentures are surgically placed into the jawbone; this provides a stable foundation for the denture, reducing the risk of slippage or movement during everyday activities.

All-on-4® dentures require fewer implants (only four!) and take less time to heal than traditional dental implants. They can either be removable or fixed. 

Who Is a Candidate for All-On-4® Dentures?

Oral health aside, a good candidate for implant dentures is typically someone who:

• Has lost most or all of their teeth or has teeth that are failing and need replacing
• Has adequate bone density in the jaw to support dental implants
• Is committed to maintaining good oral hygiene and following post-operative care instructions

Implants might not be suitable for patients taking immunosuppressants. Regularly grinding or clenching your teeth can also affect your eligibility. If either of these applies to you, we offer various other dental services to suit your needs.

How Do Implant Dentures Work?

At Dr. Kathleen Mullaney, DDS, we use implant dentures to replace multiple or full arches of missing teeth. The procedure involves the following steps:

• Consultation – Dr. Mullaney will perform a physical examination and take X-rays to determine your eligibility. If you’re a candidate, she’ll refer you to an oral surgeon to place the implants. 
• Implant placement – You will visit an oral surgeon to have your implants placed. They’ll position the implants at an angle to provide optimal support for the dentures. The surrounding bone will take about three to six months to heal fully.
• Denture placement – Your oral surgeon may place a temporary denture while the implants fuse with the jawbone (a process called osseointegration). Then, at a follow-up appointment, they’ll replace the temporary dentures with permanent ones.

Implant-Supported Dentures vs. Traditional Dentures

Whether you’re considering traditional or implant-supported dentures, there are a few key differences between the two options, including, but not limited to, the following:

• Cost – All-on-4® dentures might be more expensive than traditional dentures because you’ll have to undergo a dental implant procedure. However, implant-supported dentures provide a more long-lasting and comfortable solution for missing teeth.
• Comfort – Implant dentures tend to be more comfortable than their traditional counterpart. They don’t put pressure on the gums or require adhesives. Plus, they’re placed into the jawbone, which keeps it alive and in use; this can help prevent bone loss and maintain your facial structure.
• Durability – Traditional dentures require frequent adjustments or replacements due to wear and tear. All-on-4® dentures are typically more durable and can last for years.
• Appearance – While they’ve come a long way, traditional dentures can sometimes look artificial or feel bulky in the mouth. Implant-supported dentures are designed to look and feel more like your natural teeth.
